GPS and AIS often get discussed together, but they serve genuinely different functions on the bridge — one tells you where you are, the other tells you (and everyone else) who else is nearby. Getting both systems right, and properly integrated with the rest of the bridge suite, matters more for safety than most crews realize until something goes wrong.

GPS: The Positioning Foundation

Marine GPS receivers provide the vessel’s position, speed, and course over ground, feeding this data into virtually every other navigation system on the bridge — ECDIS, radar/ARPA, autopilot, and AIS itself all depend on accurate GPS input.

What actually matters when evaluating GPS equipment:

  • Redundancy. SOLAS vessels are required to carry backup positioning capability, since a single GPS failure shouldn’t leave a vessel without reliable position data. Confirm the system architecture includes genuine redundancy, not just a second antenna feeding the same receiver.
  • Integration compatibility. The GPS system needs to output data in formats compatible with the vessel’s specific ECDIS, radar, and autopilot equipment — compatibility issues between mismatched brands are a real and avoidable source of bridge equipment headaches.
  • Signal reliability in challenging conditions. Some receivers handle multipath interference (common near tall port infrastructure or in narrow channels) better than others — this matters disproportionately for vessels regularly transiting congested coastal or port waters.
  • Differential correction capability. Where higher-precision positioning is needed (certain port approaches, offshore operations), confirm the system supports relevant augmentation/correction services for the regions the vessel trades in.

AIS: Making Your Vessel Visible

The Automatic Identification System broadcasts a vessel’s identity, position, course, speed, and other voyage data to nearby vessels and shore stations, and simultaneously receives the same information from other AIS-equipped vessels and aids to navigation — a foundational tool for collision avoidance and traffic monitoring, mandatory under SOLAS for most commercial vessels above specified tonnage.

What actually matters when evaluating AIS equipment:

  • Class A vs Class B distinction. Commercial SOLAS vessels require Class A AIS transponders, which transmit more frequently and with higher power than the Class B units used on smaller/leisure vessels — confirm you’re evaluating equipment appropriate to your vessel’s regulatory category.
  • Integration with radar and ECDIS overlay. Modern bridge setups overlay AIS target data directly onto radar and ECDIS displays, letting officers cross-reference AIS identity data against radar-tracked targets — poor integration here undermines much of AIS’s practical safety value.
  • Data accuracy and update rate. How reliably and how frequently the system transmits and receives updated position data affects the real-time usefulness of the collision-avoidance picture it builds.
  • Long-Range AIS and satellite AIS compatibility, where relevant for fleet tracking and company operational monitoring beyond typical VHF range.

Why Integration Matters More Than Either System Alone

The real safety value of GPS and AIS comes less from either system in isolation and more from how well they integrate with radar and ECDIS to build a single, coherent traffic and navigation picture on the bridge. A watchkeeping officer cross-referencing multiple poorly integrated displays under time pressure is a recognized contributor to navigational error — which is why fleet-wide equipment standardization (discussed elsewhere in our ECDIS and radar buyer’s guides) pays off across the entire bridge suite, not just for a single piece of equipment.

Common Compliance and Operational Pitfalls

  • AIS data left inaccurate or outdated (wrong vessel name, draft, or destination) — a common and easily avoidable Port State Control finding.
  • AIS switched off inappropriately. While there are legitimate, narrow circumstances (security-related, at the Master’s discretion) where AIS transmission may be suspended, doing so outside those circumstances is both a compliance and safety issue.
  • GPS antenna placement issues causing signal shadowing from other vessel superstructure — a design consideration worth reviewing during any bridge equipment refit.

Questions to Ask Before Procurement or Refit

  1. Does our GPS/AIS setup provide genuine redundancy, not just duplicate hardware feeding a single point of failure?
  2. How well does this equipment integrate with our existing ECDIS and radar displays?
  3. Is our AIS transponder class appropriate for our vessel’s SOLAS category?
  4. What’s our process for keeping AIS static and voyage data accurate and current?
  5. Does the manufacturer offer a reliable global service network for our trading routes?

GPS and AIS carriage and performance requirements are set by SOLAS and enforced through flag-state and classification society regulation. Always confirm current requirements with your classification society and flag state before procurement or refit decisions.
