Missouri River
The Missouri is generally recognised as the longest named river in the United States. It rises in the Rocky Mountain region of Montana and travels across the Great Plains before joining the Mississippi near St. Louis. Its basin includes large areas of the western and central United States.
The river has been heavily modified by dams, reservoirs, bank-stabilisation works and navigation projects. These support flood management, power, water supply and commerce but have also changed sediment movement and habitats. Mississippi River

St. Lawrence-Great Lakes system

Their rankings depend on whether headwater branches and connected lakes are included. Length is only one measure
A ranking should not be mistaken for a ranking of importance. Discharge measures how much water passes a point. Drainage area shows the land contributing water. Navigable length indicates transport potential. Economic value, ecological condition and cultural importance require still other measures.

For Canada, the Mackenzie proper is shorter than its full system route, which exceeds 4,000 kilometres when distant headwaters are included. The Fraser extends more than 1,300 kilometres within British Columbia. The Ottawa, Athabasca, Liard and North Saskatchewan each exceed roughly 1,000 kilometres under common measurements. These rounded descriptions are often more honest than presenting a kilometre-perfect league table assembled from different methodologies.

Is the Mississippi or Missouri longer?
Most modern U.S. reference lists place the Missouri slightly ahead as a named river. The Mississippi remains the principal named trunk flowing to the Gulf. When the longest connected headwater route is considered, the two are described together as the Mississippi-Missouri system.
Why do some lists rank the Mackenzie differently?
Some measure only the Mackenzie from Great Slave Lake. Others follow the longest connected route through the Slave, Peace and Finlay rivers. Both can be valid, but they answer different questions. A good table labels the full system separately.
Does a longer river carry more water?
Not necessarily. Discharge depends on precipitation, tributaries, climate, evaporation and withdrawals. A shorter river in a wet region may carry more water than a much longer river crossing arid land.
