Personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of those areas where compliance requirements sound simple on paper but real-world effectiveness depends heavily on fit, maintenance, and whether crew actually use it consistently under real working conditions. Here’s a practical rundown of what seafarers actually need, by task and hazard type.
The Regulatory and Company-Policy Framework
Unlike some equipment categories covered elsewhere on this site, PPE requirements come from a combination of sources: SOLAS and STCW baseline requirements, flag-state occupational safety regulations, classification society and ISM Code safety management system requirements, and — often the most detailed layer — individual company safety policies that go beyond the regulatory minimum based on their own risk assessments and incident history.
PPE by Onboard Task Category
General deck work. Hard hats, safety boots with reinforced toe protection, high-visibility clothing, and work gloves form the baseline for most deck operations. Given how much time deck crew spend on slippery, moving surfaces, non-slip sole design matters as much as toe protection.
Engine room work. Hearing protection (given sustained noise exposure near running machinery), heat-resistant gloves, eye protection against splashing fluids or debris, and coveralls appropriate to the specific task — engine room PPE needs vary considerably between routine watchkeeping and active maintenance/repair work, and company procedures should clearly distinguish between these.
Enclosed space entry. This is one of the highest-risk PPE categories on board, given the well-documented history of fatalities in this specific hazard. Required equipment typically includes a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or supplied-air system, atmosphere testing/gas detection equipment, a full-body harness with retrieval line, and communication equipment with topside personnel. Given the IMO has periodically revised enclosed space entry recommendations, crews should confirm their procedures and equipment reflect the current version of these requirements rather than an outdated internal policy.
Chemical and hazardous cargo handling. Chemical-resistant suits, respiratory protection matched to the specific cargo’s hazard profile, and specialized gloves — tanker and chemical carrier crews need PPE selected against the specific cargo Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) requirements for whatever’s actually being carried, not a generic all-purpose chemical protection kit.
Hot work (welding, cutting). Welding helmets/shields, flame-resistant clothing, and appropriate respiratory protection against fumes — combined with fire watch procedures given the elevated fire risk any hot work creates on board.
Working aloft or over the side. Fall-arrest harnesses and lanyards rated for the specific task, along with appropriate footwear and, where relevant, personal flotation devices for over-side work.
Why PPE Compliance on Paper Isn’t the Same as Real Protection
Fit matters enormously, and is often overlooked. PPE that doesn’t fit properly — too large, too small, or simply the wrong type for a crew member’s body — gets used less consistently or less effectively even when technically provided.
