Length is only one river measure. Discharge describes the volume of water passing a point. Drainage area describes the land contributing water. Navigable length describes how far suitable craft can travel. Economic, ecological and cultural importance require still other indicators.
The Ohio demonstrates the difference: it is not close to the top by named length, yet it is central to inland freight. The short Detroit River is critical to Great Lakes shipping. The very long Rio Grande may have limited flow in some reaches because of an arid climate and extensive withdrawals.
