Lifesaving appliances (LSA) are the equipment nobody wants to need and everyone needs to have work perfectly the one time it matters. Life rafts and immersion suits sit at the center of this category, and getting the selection, maintenance, and crew familiarity right is a genuine safety-of-life issue, not just a compliance checkbox.
Life Rafts: What SOLAS Requires and Why Selection Still Matters
SOLAS mandates that vessels carry sufficient life raft capacity to accommodate the total number of persons on board, typically with additional redundancy requirements (such as capacity on both sides of the vessel in case of listing). Within that baseline compliance requirement, real selection differences matter:
Capacity and vessel type fit. Life rafts come in a range of capacities, and matching raft size and quantity to the vessel’s actual crew/passenger complement — with appropriate margin — is the starting point, but larger vessels also need to think through embarkation logistics: how quickly and safely can the full complement actually board the rafts available in an emergency.
Davit-launched vs. throw-overboard rafts. Larger vessels typically use davit-launched systems allowing more controlled deployment and boarding, while smaller vessels may rely on throw-overboard rafts that inflate automatically on contact with water. The right choice depends heavily on vessel size, freeboard height, and typical sea conditions in the vessel’s trading area.
Cold-water and extreme climate packages. Vessels trading in polar or cold-water regions require rafts with enhanced thermal insulation and survival equipment packages appropriate to the extended survival times that may be needed given rescue response times in remote areas.
Servicing interval and provider network. Life rafts require periodic servicing (commonly annual, per SOLAS and manufacturer requirements) at approved service stations — a raft manufacturer or model with poor service station coverage in your regular trading ports can create real logistical and compliance headaches.
Hydrostatic release units (HRUs). These automatically release rafts if a vessel sinks before manual launch is possible — confirm HRU type and expiry tracking is built into your planned maintenance system, since expired or improperly maintained HRUs are a recurring Port State Control finding.
Immersion Suits: Beyond Just Meeting the Headcount
Immersion suits provide thermal protection and buoyancy for personnel abandoning ship into cold water, and SOLAS requires them to be provided for all crew members on vessels operating in colder waters, with specific performance standards for thermal protection and donning time.
Donning time and ease of use under stress. SOLAS performance standards specify a maximum donning time (commonly around two minutes), but real-world usability under actual emergency stress — cold hands, limited light, rolling deck — matters more than the standard laboratory-condition test result. Crew familiarity through regular drills matters as much as suit design here.
Sizing range. A fleet or vessel with a genuinely international crew needs immersion suits available across a realistic size range — a common and avoidable gap is stocking only a narrow size range that doesn’t fit the actual crew composition.
Buoyancy and thermal performance for the actual trading region. Suits appropriate for genuinely cold, high-latitude trading routes differ meaningfully from suits adequate for more temperate routes — matching the suit’s thermal rating to realistic worst-case water temperature for the vessel’s trading pattern is a real safety consideration, not just a cost-minimization exercise.
Storage and accessibility. Suits stored in awkward or hard-to-reach locations, or without clear signage, undermine even well-chosen equipment during a genuine emergency — storage location and crew familiarity with it should be part of regular drills, not just a static compliance detail.
Why Maintenance and Drills Matter More Than Equipment Choice Alone
As with most safety equipment covered in this series, the equipment itself is rarely the weak link when incidents occur — inadequate maintenance scheduling, expired servicing, and insufficient crew familiarization through regular drills are the more common real-world gaps. A vessel with excellent life raft and immersion suit equipment, but crew who haven’t practiced donning suits or launching rafts recently, is meaningfully less safe than the compliance paperwork suggests.
A Practical Checklist
- Does our life raft capacity and configuration realistically match our crew/passenger complement and vessel layout, not just the minimum SOLAS threshold?
- Are our raft servicing intervals and HRU expiry dates tracked in our planned maintenance system with adequate lead time?
- Do our immersion suits cover the realistic size range of our actual crew?
- Are suits stored accessibly, and do drills specifically include donning practice under realistic time pressure?
- Does our servicing provider network adequately cover our regular trading ports?
