Key Criteria for Evaluating a Radar System
Frequency band suitability. Most commercial vessels carry both X-band (better resolution, more affected by weather/sea clutter) and S-band (better performance in heavy rain and rough seas, lower resolution) radar, since each compensates for the other’s weaknesses. Confirm the system supports the combination appropriate for your trading routes and typical weather conditions.
ARPA target tracking capacity and accuracy. How many targets can the system simultaneously track, and how reliably does it distinguish real targets from sea and rain clutter? This matters disproportionately in congested traffic areas and poor weather.
Integration with ECDIS and bridge systems. Modern radar increasingly overlays onto ECDIS displays and integrates with AIS target data, reducing the number of separate screens an officer must cross-reference during a busy watch. Poor integration between radar and other bridge systems is a recognized contributor to watchkeeping error.
Antenna and scanner reliability in harsh marine environments. Radar scanners are exposed to constant weather, salt spray, and vibration — manufacturer reputation for scanner reliability and ease of at-sea maintenance is a genuinely important practical consideration, not just a technical spec.
Display clarity and alarm management. Similar to ECDIS, how intuitively a system presents target alerts, guard zones, and collision-risk warnings affects real-world usability under watchkeeping pressure.
Fleet standardization. As with ECDIS, companies operating multiple vessels benefit significantly from standardizing radar systems across the fleet to reduce training gaps when officers transfer between ships.
Maintenance and Lifecycle Considerations
Radar systems require periodic servicing and calibration to remain compliant and accurate — a system with an accessible, globally available service network matters as much as initial purchase price, particularly for vessels trading internationally where local service access varies enormously by region.
Common Compliance Pitfalls
Port State Control inspections regularly flag radar-related deficiencies, commonly including:
- Expired or missing performance test certificates
- Poor scanner condition due to inadequate maintenance
- Crew unfamiliarity with ARPA target tracking functions during inspection demonstrations
These are avoidable issues, and they point to the same theme as ECDIS: the equipment itself is rarely the weak link — inadequate maintenance scheduling and insufficient crew familiarization training are the more common real-world failure points.
Questions to Ask Before Procurement
- Does this system meet current IMO performance standards and carry valid classification society type-approval for our trading routes?
- What’s the manufacturer’s global service and spare parts network like, particularly in the ports we regularly call at?
- How well does this system integrate with our existing ECDIS and AIS equipment?
- What does crew feedback say about display usability and alarm clarity during actual watchkeeping, not just in a showroom demonstration?
- What’s the total cost of ownership including scheduled servicing, not just the upfront purchase price?
A Balanced Take
As with ECDIS, there’s no universally “best” radar system — the right choice depends on trading pattern, existing bridge equipment, and fleet size. The more valuable investment for most operators is less about chasing the newest technical specifications and more about ensuring consistent maintenance discipline and thorough crew familiarization on whatever system is installed.
