ECDIS Systems Buyer’s Guide: What Ships Actually Need

ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) has moved from optional navigation aid to mandatory primary navigation system on most SOLAS-regulated vessels — which means the choice of system, and how well crews are trained on it, has real operational and safety consequences. Here’s what to actually evaluate, rather than a simple “best system” ranking that would go stale the moment new software updates ship.

Why ECDIS Choice Matters More Than It Seems

Unlike many pieces of bridge equipment, ECDIS systems differ meaningfully in their user interface, chart data compatibility, and how they handle route monitoring and alarm management. Since STCW requires officers to complete generic ECDIS training plus type-specific familiarization on whichever system is actually installed, a ship-owner’s choice of ECDIS platform has a direct downstream training and crewing implication — officers moving between vessels with different ECDIS brands need type-specific familiarization each time, which has real cost and scheduling impact across a fleet.

Key Criteria for Evaluating an ECDIS System

IMO and type-approval compliance. Any system under serious consideration should carry current IMO performance standard compliance and be type-approved by a recognized classification society — this isn’t a differentiator between systems so much as a non-negotiable baseline.

Chart data compatibility. Confirm the system supports the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) formats your trading routes require, alongside secondary/raster chart support for areas where full ENC coverage isn’t yet available.

Integration with existing bridge equipment. ECDIS increasingly integrates with radar (as an overlay), AIS, GPS, and autopilot systems. A system that integrates smoothly with a vessel’s existing bridge suite reduces both installation cost and the cognitive load on watchkeeping officers managing multiple displays.

User interface and alarm management. This is where officer feedback matters most in practice — systems vary in how intuitively they present route monitoring, cross-track error, and safety-contour alarms. An interface that’s confusing under pressure is a genuine safety consideration, not just a preference.

Fleet standardization potential. For companies operating multiple vessels, standardizing on a single ECDIS brand across the fleet significantly reduces training overhead and the risk of officers being unfamiliar with a system when transferred between ships.

Cybersecurity and update management. As ECDIS systems become more networked (chart updates, weather routing integration, remote diagnostics), how the manufacturer handles software updates and cybersecurity patching is an increasingly important operational consideration, not just an IT afterthought.

Manufacturer training and support infrastructure. Since type-specific familiarization is mandatory, a manufacturer with a strong global network of approved training centers reduces logistical headaches when crewing internationally.

The Training Requirement Nobody Should Skip

Regardless of which system a vessel carries, STCW requires officers to complete:

  1. Generic ECDIS training — covering universal principles applicable to any ECDIS system
  2. Type-specific training — familiarization on the exact manufacturer and model installed on the vessel the officer will actually serve on

A common and genuinely risky shortcut some companies take is assuming generic ECDIS training alone is sufficient — it isn’t, and port state control inspections have specifically flagged inadequate type-specific familiarization as a compliance and safety issue.

What to Ask Before a Fleet-Wide ECDIS Decision

  1. Does this system’s chart data licensing model fit our trading pattern (subscription costs can vary significantly by manufacturer and region)?
  2. How many approved type-specific training centers exist in the regions where we crew from?
  3. What’s the manufacturer’s track record on software update frequency and cybersecurity patching?
  4. How well does this system integrate with our existing radar, AIS, and autopilot equipment, especially on older vessels being retrofitted rather than newbuilds?
  5. What do our current officers who’ve used this system say about its usability under real operational pressure, not just in a demo environment?

A Balanced Perspective

There is no single “best” ECDIS system in an absolute sense — the right choice depends heavily on fleet size, trading pattern, existing bridge equipment, and crew familiarity. The companies that get the most value from their ECDIS investment tend to be the ones that treat the decision as a fleet-wide training and standardization question, not purely a procurement one.


ECDIS requirements and standards are set by the IMO and enforced through classification society type-approval and flag-state regulation. Always confirm current type-approval status and training requirements directly with your classification society and flag state before making procurement or crewing decisions.
