China’s Shenzhen Port Replaces Diesel Vehicles with Electric & LNG Yard Tractors

11/06/2025

SHENZHEN, China – In a landmark move for green port operations in China, DaChan Bay Terminals has officially completed a comprehensive conversion programme, eliminating all diesel-powered container trucks from its fleet. This achievement solidifies DaChan Bay’s position as the first terminal in the major port of Shenzhen to operate a completely diesel-free in-yard tractor fleet.

The transition to a clean-energy fleet marks a significant step forward in reducing the terminal’s carbon footprint and improving local air quality. The final batch of advanced battery-swap tractors was delivered in late July and has been fully integrated into daily operations, ensuring a seamless and efficient shift away from fossil fuels.

A Two-Pronged Approach to Clean Haulage

DaChan Bay’s new internal haulage fleet is a model of modern, sustainable port equipment. The terminal has strategically adopted two primary clean-energy solutions:

  • Battery-Swap Electric Tractors (72% of the fleet): These state-of-the-art vehicles offer rapid recharging through automated battery swapping, minimising downtime and enabling continuous, zero-emission operation within the terminal. They represent the core of the terminal’s long-term green strategy.

  • LNG-Powered Tractors (28% of the fleet): Complementing the electric fleet, these tractors run on Liquefied Natural Gas, a cleaner-burning alternative to diesel that significantly reduces emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter.

Driving a Greener Future for Chinese Ports

The complete phase-out of diesel tractors is a critical component of China’s broader “blue sky” initiative and its ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality. Ports are major hubs of economic activity but have traditionally been significant sources of emissions. DaChan Bay’s successful conversion serves as a powerful case study for other terminals in China and across the globe, demonstrating the operational and environmental viability of clean-energy technologies.

“Reaching this milestone is not just an achievement for DaChan Bay, but a signal to the entire logistics industry,” said a terminal representative. “By proving that a 100% diesel-free yard operation is possible, we are paving the way for wider adoption of electric and alternative fuel vehicles in port ecosystems, contributing to a more sustainable supply chain.”

The new fleet is expected to dramatically cut the terminal’s operating emissions, contributing to cleaner air in the Shenzhen region and aligning with global environmental standards for port operations.
