San Francisco Bay Ferry Orders Three Electric Ferries

The first ship is expected to join the fleet in early 2027.

San Francisco – The San Francisco Bay Ferry Board of Directors has authorized the purchase of the country’s first three battery-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels
from All American Marine (AAM). The three vessels, each with a capacity of 150 passengers, will be the first delivered under the Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) program. The first vessel is expected to join the fleet in early 2027.

“ With this investment, we will connect new neighborhoods in San Francisco and lay the foundation for widespread regional and national adoption of zero-emission marine transportation,” said Jim Wunderman, chairman of the board of SF Bay Ferry. “ This is a historic moment for SF Bay Ferry’s electrification efforts.”
All American Marine will build the ferries at its facility in Bellingham, Washington . The company has 30 years of experience building aluminum vessels in the Pacific Northwest, including two hybrid-electric catamarans and Sea Change, the world’s first commercial passenger vessel powered 100 percent by hydrogen fuel cells, which is currently being operated as a demonstration project by SF Bay Ferry. The SF Bay Ferry fleet connects several key destinations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The service operates on a variety of routes, including Oakland, Alameda, Vallejo, Richmond and South San Francisco, among others. It is part of the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), a public agency that aims to improve transportation accessibility and sustainability in the Bay Region.
