Grimaldi Group Orders Six Methanol-Powered RoPax Ferries

06/30/2025

The Grimaldi Group has taken a major step toward decarbonizing Mediterranean shipping with an order for six advanced methanol-fueled RoPax ferries. Designed by Finnish naval architecture firm Deltamarin and built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) in Nanjing, these vessels are set for delivery between 2028 and 2030.

A New Era for Mediterranean Transport

Four of the ferries will operate under the Italian flag with Grimaldi Lines, while the remaining two will serve under the Greek flag with subsidiary Minoan Lines. Designed for efficiency and comfort, each 229-meter vessel will accommodate 2,500 passengers300+ vehicles, and 3,300 lane meters of rolling freight, alongside 300+ cabins for overnight travelers.

Cutting-Edge Green Technology

These ships will be the first methanol-powered ferries purpose-built for the Mediterranean, reducing CO₂ emissions by over 50% compared to conventional vessels. Key innovations include shore power connectivitylow-friction silicon hull coatings, and optimized propulsion systems to maximize fuel efficiency. The design also incorporates advanced energy management to further minimize environmental impact.

Strategic Importance

This investment aligns with Grimaldi’s long-term sustainability strategy and tightening global emissions regulations, including the IMO 2050 targets. Deltamarin’s expertise ensures seamless integration of methanol propulsion while maintaining high operational performance.

Industry Reactions

“These ferries represent a transformative shift in sustainable shipping, combining high capacity with industry-leading emissions reductions,” said a Deltamarin spokesperson. The project underscores methanol’s growing role as a clean marine fuel, offering a practical alternative to LNG and traditional marine diesel.
