China’s Cosco Shipping has launched one of its largest fleet expansion programs to date, confirming newbuilding orders worth more than USD 7 billion with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
The announcement was made during a high-profile signing ceremony held in Shanghai, where the two state-owned giants formalised a contract covering 87 vessels across multiple ship categories. According to Chinese industry sources, the package is valued at over 50 billion yuan, underscoring Beijing’s continued commitment to strengthening its maritime and logistics capabilities.
The agreement marks a significant milestone for both organisations. For Cosco Shipping, the investment aligns with long-term strategic plans to modernise and scale up its global fleet amid rising demand for energy-efficient and environmentally advanced vessels. For CSSC, the order reinforces its position as one of the world’s most influential shipbuilding groups, further boosting its orderbook heading into 2026.
More details on vessel types, delivery schedules, and technical specifications are expected to follow as the shipyards begin executing one of the most substantial single-order shipbuilding programmes seen in recent years.
